Transfer from Rome to Fossanova (near Latina) to visit the famous abbey built by the Cistercians who imported the architectural forms of French Gothic style into Italy. The church with its three naves was consecrated in 1208 and the façade is decorated with a beautiful rose window. It is flanked by the abbey buildings. The upper rooms include the chamber where St. Thomas of Aquinas died in 1274. In the afternoon visit to Ninfa, a mediaeval town abandoned in the 4th century and now overrun by thick vegetation. There are ruins of houses, churches and the town walls, and facing a romantic lake, the remains of the Caetani Castle. All around is a natural oasis, home to several species of bird. Return to Rome. N.B. Ninfa can be visited from April to October, the first Saturday and following Sunday of every month, as well as May 1st and the third Sunday of April, May and June.
