Pinacoteca Nazionale di Cagliari

The National Picture Gallery of Cagliari houses various collections often deriving from private collections. The painting collection includes works coming from various important churches of Cagliari, among which worthy of note are the 15th- and 16th-century paintings of Sardinian and Catalan sacred art and works by 20th-century Sardinian artists. Of extreme interest and beauty is the collection of 14th-century Spanish-Arab pottery and that of Sardinian weapons. A separate place is occupied by the collection of ethnographic material produced in Sardinia in modern times: of considerable importance is the jewellery, including precious pieces in gold and silver, and textiles and embroidery - products connected with the most ancient Sardinian tradition.

In the Archaeology Museum of Cagliari the ancient story of the land of Sardinia is accurately described and borne witness to by the "Nuraghic civilization", which endowed it with an autonomous cultural physiognomy of great interest. Most of the finds displayed in the Museum come from excavation campaigns carried out in various Sardinian archaeological areas, including the famous Nuraghic bronze statuettes brought to light at Monti Arcosu-Uta and the copper ingots with the marks of the Cyprian-Mycenaean alphabet from Serra Ilixi di Nuragus. Of particular importance are the beautiful jewellery pieces of gold, decorated bronze, glass, and amulets, representing divinities of the Egyptian pantheon that accompanied the deceased to the hereafter. An important proof of the activity of the island also comes from a large numismatic collection and the numerous military discharges, written on bronze, of the Sardinian soldiers and sailors who served in the Roman army and fleet.
